Jon Jost Characteristics
Jon Jost has focused the majority of his films on American topics. Such films like Speaking Directly, Stagefright, and Uncommon Senses fall within the form of an Essay-film. I attempted to understand what essay films are, however the best description would be from Noel Burch in his book The Theory of Film Practice which he states that "the cinematic revolution now in progress is based on what is essentially a very simple idea: that a subject can engender form and that to choose a subject is to make an aesthetic choice." (Noel Burch, "Non-Fictional Subject", from the Theory of Film Practice). Jost also does essay/fictions like that of Angel City and of course the "avant-garde" as well as "new narrative" which are exactly what they suggest.
