Well, there are alternative visions to the homosexual self-hatred in Maas's film, even in its own time--like Genet's "Chant d'amour."

There is a very clever commentary on the incredible sentimentalism of "Image in the Snow" and its dubious misogyny (the cruel mother myth) in George Kuchar's 'Hold Me While I'm Naked" when the breakfast scene mocks Maas.
