Ellen Spiro Characteristics
Ellen Spiro has produced, directed, shot and edited her own independent productions since 1986. She is currently in production on a Channel 4/London commissioned video about contemporary nomads. Her videos have been broadcast on PBS across the U.S. and around the world, and have won numerous awards, including a Golden Gate Award, USA Film Festival First Prize, and a National Black Programming Consortium's Prized Pieces Award. She has received grant awards from ITVS, Jerome Foundation, NYSCA, Art Matters, Paul Robeson Fund, and the New York Foundation for the Arts. Her use of inventive camera techniques, humor, and spontaneity have gained her an international reputation including screenings at the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the International Public Television Conference (INPUT '91 and '94).
