Ilene Segalove Characteristics
A self-described "child of Beverly Hills," Ilene Segalove records the experience of growing up in southern California in a semi-documentary and very funny manner in tapes that embrace the trivial and familiar. Treating television as a friendly piece of furniture, much of Segalove's work reflects the enormous impact television had on her childhood, demonstrating how we learn about ourselves from watching the "tube." Through autobiographical stories, a dry sense of humor, and self-parody, Segalove reveals how television straddles the line between reality and fantasy, to the extent that people are capable of responding more deeply to situations on television than to events in their own lives.
