Michael Smith Biography
Michael Smith was born in Chicago in 1951, and he received his Bachelor's Degree from Colorado College. He has also studied at the Whitney Museum of American Art, and was artist-in-residence at several colleges and universities, including University of
Colorado and Illinois State University.
Along with being a video artist, Smith is also a performance artist, and appears in most, if not all, of his videos. His videos deal mostly with the blandness of television and popular culture. He has produced tapes since 1978, when he completed Baby I
kki. Many of his videos feature "Mike" (also sometimes called "Blandman"), an alter-ego he created for his tapes and performances.
Smith's work has been presented at festivals and museums, including The Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and The Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston.
