Joyce Wieland Characteristics
Joyce Wieland: charming wit represent some of the great
treasures of Canadian experimental film. The images and
motifs which she explored in her 16 mm short films have
important thematic and formal connections to her work as
a painter, sculptor, collage-artist, quilt maker, and feature
film director (THE FAR SHORE). Wieland's career includes a
number of important artistic collaborations with New York
City and Toronto-based colleagues (Michael Snow, Hollis
Frampton, George Kuchar, Wendy Michener and Judy
Steed to name just a few), but what truly distinguishes
her filmmaking is the fact that she consistently pursued
her own distinct artistic vision. She worked in New York from 1963-70.
