Annette Barbier Characteristics
Annette Barbier began working in video in Chicago in the 1970's during an era of formalist experimentation that concentrated on inventing new forms through abstracted and colorized images. Video was seen primarily as a process, a dialogue between artist and visualizing tools. Barbier constructs a story line in a fashion similar to stringing beads, and while there is not always an obvious relationship between one image and the next, there is a sense of narrative organization that is progressively developed through the tape. The work centers around thematic groupings of images of personal content, with a vocabulary of the female domain.
