See Saw Seems


See Saw Seems, was done in 1965. The film expressed illusions, perceptions, odds of perception, and visual perceptions, questioning, what is photo reality, illusion, or art? We see images changing on the screen into other images This happens when the camera is focused on a particular area of an object, of the original image seen at first. A new image is seen, which creates an illusion, making the audience's eye perceive another image that's been created by a slight transformation of the focused area that is being seen, which is a part of the original image. I think the music in this film helps create the depth of the image, as the camera moving towards an image each time it focuses on a specific area of the original image. For example, a woman's chest is seen nude, as the camera focuses on her neck and breast area of her body, her nipples eventually turn into a tree and the center of her breast becomes a trail that leads upward - like a steep road - to her neck where the audience would see a castle instead of her neck. So, after the image of a hill-like landscape is created you no longer see the original image as it appeared to be a nude woman at first, a new image was created with in a image. I felt that the music drew me into the focus area of the original image, and helped create the new image that was seen after.

It also seemed as if he incorporated the eye and the sun to be interchangeable in parts of the film. It also appear for the most part that a lot of the new images created on an image, would usually end up being some kind of landscape scenery. In certain images the change in color tones could make the newly created images much visible, so that the audience could than no longer see the original image. In a small way, it sort of reminded me of those posters, where if you stare at the picture for a certain amount of time, you can eventually see what the picture behind it is. As he moved closer and closer to each area he focused on, the chest, the rooster's eye, it made my eyes feel similar to how it sort of would feel, if I stared at one of those posters. You will eventually see what is behind the original image

Vanderbeek created on film. This film, however, unlike those posters, continuously draws you in deeper and deeper into another image, right after one another all the way to the end of the film. In the end I thought that he gave this film the perfect name, because you would "see" an image, than after you "saw" the image, the original image in the end wasn't what it "seemed" to be!

The transformation of images to form other images was very artistic in regards to the selection of drawings that was chosen for the film . Stan Vanderbeek's way of thinking and how he worked with collages is truly visible in this film. It is interesting to observe see how some people see things. It was a creative film.
