Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde
This is an adaptation of Robert L. Stevenson tale of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886). This psychological spoof shows Jekyll and Hyde against the striking black and white sets. White has reframed the tale by using an all female cast. All the scenery and props, from the laboratory filled with beakers to the city full of skyscapers are handpainted. The dual role is portrayed by Penny White and also stars Genie Chipps and J. Kathleen White as Dr. Jekyll's maid. It was shot on 16mm film and edited by David Saunders.
I have always been fascinated by the story of Jekyll and Hyde and to this different version was appealing to me. To see some else's vision of it was quite refreshing. Even though it took some time for me to get used to it, I found that there were aspects of it that I liked: the different camera angles used, the fact that it was in black and white, and the abstract aspect of it. Even though the two dimensional set and props sometimes looked ridiculous and child like, it added to the atmosphere of the film.
