Quiz for February 12.

The quiz will be given at the end of class and asks you to define, explain, or give an example on a variety of topics. There are ten questions; these are the topics.

1. What criticism is (1e 29, 2e 27)

2. What criticism is not (1e 31, 3e 29)

3. How television socializes and educates (p. 4)

4. How TV creates community and consensus (1e 6; 2e 5)

5. Auteur criticism.

6. Examples of “text” in analysis.

7. Semiotic analysis.

8. “Audience” vs. “reader.”

9. “Interpretive community.”

10.  Ambiguous signs (vs. universal signs).

Keep in mind the Difference between a definition and an example. A definition or explanation is general; an example is specific. Like this:

Explain the term "biopic."

    A film biography, usually of a famous person, often considerably fictionalized  to conform to the preferred narrative structure of film.

Give an example of a "biopic."
