____________________________________________________________________

The species Rana clamitans was first described by Latreille in 1801.  In 1820, Rafinesque identified the Northern Green Frog (Rana clamitans melanota) as a separate subspecies from the Bronze Frog (Rana clamitans clamitans).

Currently, a partitioning of the genus Rana worldwide has been proposed.  It would result in the recognition of two genera of these frogs in North America and Canada, Lithobates and Rana.  Under the proposed change, Rana clamitans melanota would be changed to Lithobates clamitans melanota (Lithobates (Aquarana) clamitans — Dubois, 2006).  Further information can be found at the Center for North American Herpetology web page.
