RANGE DESCRIPTION
The species is found north to southeastern Canada, including the Maritime Provinces, southern Quebec and southern Ontario, and the eastern United States west to north-central Minnesota, eastern Iowa, extreme eastern Kansaa, eastern Oklahoma, and south-central Texas. Detailed distribution of each subspecies below follows Mecham (1967) and Conant & Collins (1991).

RED-SPOTTED NEWT Notophthalmus viridescens viridescens
The Red-spotted Newt occupies the northeastern portion of the species' range, including the Canadian provinces (except western Ontario) and the eastern United States west to central Michigan (lower peninsula), central Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee east of the Mississippi, south to central Georgia and Alabama and northern North Carolina. The western extent of this subspecies overlaps with the Central Newt, N. v. louisianenesis (see below).
BROKEN-STRIPED NEWT Notophthalmus viridescens dorsalis
The Broken-striped Newt has a small range, inhabiting the costal plains from Harnett and Craven counties, North Carolina, south to southern Georgetown County, South Carolina.
CENTRAL NEWT Notophthalmus viridescens louisianensis
The Central Newt ranges widely from southeastern Atlantic and Gulf states from southern South Carolina to northern Florida, west to south-central Texas, eastern Oklahoma and Kansas, north to Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and Ontario west of the range of N. v. viridescens. They appear to be absent from the prairie peninsula in Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio, probably due to habitat desiccation. This subspecies intergrades with N. v. viridescens over a broad zone across lower peninsula in Michigan and into Indiana. Specimens from this area of intergradation can display coloration intermediate between the two subspecies.
PENINSULA NEWT Notophthalmus viridescens piaropicola
The Peninsula Newt is restricted to peninsular Florida south of central Alachua County. It is most commonly found among hyacinth roots in freshwater, occasionally emerging to walk on floating vegetation.
