I teach a one-credit course on basic Library Research Methods in the Spring Semester. The COM 100 course is scheduled in the Instruction Classroom (Room 411) in the Ruth Haas Library on Tuesdays during weeks 2-11 of the spring semester. It is offered on a pass/no pass basis and is open to students at all levels. Nontraditional students find the course particularly helpful, as it enables them to catch up on changes in library technology. The enrollment cap is 25 students.
Course content covers basic information theory, information formats, search strategy, and the use of electronic information retrieval systems, including the CONSULS online catalog, electronic databases, and resources on the World Wide Web.
As the liaison librarian to the English, Art, Communication, History, Music, Theatre Arts, and World Languages & Literatures departments at WCSU, I am responsible for providing course-integrated library instruction at the invitation of the professor and for providing research consultations at the request of students enrolled in courses in the seven disciplines. To make an appointment for library instruction or to schedule research consultation, please contact me by phone (837-8308) or email (reitzj@wcsu.edu) or drop by my office in Room 402 on the fourth floor of the Haas Library, near the glass elevator (please knock if my door is closed). I am also responsible for collection development in my liaison departments and in media.
As a service to the library profession, I publish the Dictionary for Library and Information Science (Westport CT: Libraries Unlimited, 2004) in print, and its online hypertext counterpart ODLIS: Online Dictionary for Library and Information Science, updated annually. A copy of the print edition of the dictionary is available in the reference section on the first floor of the Ruth Haas Library under the call number: Ref Z 1006.R45 2004.
