Citing Sources to Avoid Plagiarism

Plagiarism is a form of cheating which may lower the grade you receive on your assignment. You must cite the source of any direct quotation and of any facts or ideas you obtained from another source. For more information about how to avoid plagiarism, please watch this brief video from Bainbridge College in YouTube: Plagiarism: How to Avoid It (www.youtube.com/watch?v=2q0NlWcTq1Y).

For tips on citation format, please see the MLA Formatting and Style Guide courtesy of the OWL: Purdue Online Writing Lab (owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01).

Reference Books for Background Information

Reference books are shelved by Library of Congress call number on the fourth and fifth floors Haas Library. To learn about LC call numbers, please watch the brief video Reading a Call Number in YouTube (courtesy of the Douglas College Library). Reference books may not be checked out, but free scanners are available for student use on the first floor of the Library (please use your flash drive).

CONSULS Online Catalog for Books and Media

CONSULS catalog workstations are concentrated on the first floor of the Haas Library, but there are some workstations on each of the other floors. You may logon to CONSULS via the WCSU Libraries Homepage at library.wcsu.edu or directly at www.consuls.org. For more detailed instructions on searching, please see the yellow CONSULS flyer on the display rack on the first floor.

Please Note: CONSULS ignores upper and lower case, and you may omit punctuation, except the hyphen which must be replaced by a space.

TO FIND WORKS WRITTEN ABOUT A SPECIFIC COMPOSER OR PERFORMER:

Select Subject at the CONSULS main menu, then type the writer's name last-name-first. Correct spelling is important. To limit results to items owned by WCSU, click Limit/Sort and then select WCSU under "Where Item Is Located."

Example: mozart wolfgang amadeus (press RETURN or ENTER)
Or just: mozart w (press ENTER)

CONSULS will retrieve a list of Library of Congress Subject Headings which begin with the words you typed:

Mozart Wolfgang Amadeus 1756 1791 (main heading is subdivided)
Mozart Wolfgang Amadeus 1756 1791--Chamber music
Mozart Wolfgang Amadeus 1756 1791--Criticism and interpretation
Mozart Wolfgang Amadeus 1756 1791--Discography
Mozart Wolfgang Amadeus 1756 1791--Opera
Mozart Wolfgang Amadeus 1756 1791--Symphonies

PLEASE NOTE: Personal name headings may also be subdivided by the titles of individual works, for example:

Mozart Wolfgang Amadeus 1756 1791--Nozze di Figaro

To find videorecordings or DVDs about the musician, type the person's name last-name-first as SUBJECT. At the resulting headings display, click Limit/Sort and then select either DVD or VIDEO under "Material Type."

TO FIND WORKS BY A SPECIFIC COMPOSER OR PERFORMER:

Select Author at the CONSULS main menu, then type the writer's name last-name-first. Correct spelling is important.

Example: bernstein leonard (press ENTER)
Or just: bernstein leo (ENTER)

To limit search results to items owned by WCSU, click on Limit/Sort and then select WCSU under "Where Item Is Located." To limit results to music scores, select Printed Music under "Material Type" and to limit results to recorded music (CDs and LPs), select Sound Record under "Material Type."

For classical composers, an Author search will yield a list of standard titles. For example, a search on the name bach carl philipp will retrieve:

Concertos, / Flute, String Orchestra. Selections
Concertos, / Harpsichord, Orchestra, H. 433, D Major
Concertos, / Keyboard Instrument, String Orchestra. Selections

To locate a specific work by a known composer, it is often easier to perform a Keywords search on the name and the opus number.

Example: beethoven and op 135 (press ENTER)

For the works of certain composers, other numbering systems are used instead of opus numbers:

Example: bach and bwv 1047 (BWV stands for Bach Werke Verzeichnis or "Bach Works Catalogue")
Example: mozart and k 626 (K stands for Köchel Verzeichnis or "Ludwig von Köchel Catalogue")
Example: schubert and d 803 (D stands for Deutsch or "Otto Erich Deutsch Catalogue")

TO FIND WORKS WITH A SPECIFIC TITLE:

Select Title at the CONSULS main menu, then type as much of the title as you remember in correct word order. In CONSULS, you may omit "a," "an," or "the" at the beginning of a title.

Example: The Classical Style: Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven (press ENTER)
Or just: classical style (ENTER)

Musical compositions are often known by more than one title, for example, Beethoven's "Eroica" Symphony. In library catalogs, works with multiple titles are cataloged under a single uniform title, in this case Symphonies. no. 3, op. 55, Eb major under the composer's name (Beethoven, Ludwig van, 1770-1827).

TO FIND INFORMATION ABOUT A SPECIFIC TOPIC BY SUBJECT HEADING:

Select Subject at the CONSULS main menu, then type the Library of Congress subject heading that best describes your topic. Correct spelling and word order are important. The complete list of Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) is published in a set of big red books available in the Reference Area on the first floor.

Example: Gregorian chants--History and criticism (press ENTER)
Or just: gregorian chants (ENTER)

Example: Jazz musicians--Biography (ENTER)
Or just: jazz musicians (ENTER)

TO FIND INFORMATION ABOUT A SPECIFIC TOPIC BY KEYWORD(S):

Select Keyword(s) at the CONSULS main menu, then type the words which best describe your topic, in any order.

Example: (jazz or blues) and history press ENTER
Narrower: (jazz or blues) and new orleans and histor* press ENTER

Example: trumpet and (concerto* or concerti) press ENTER
Narrower: trumpet and (concerto* or concerti) and haydn press ENTER

Example: bach and (fugue* or counterpoint or contrapuntal) press ENTER
Broader: baroque and (fugue* or counterpoint or contrapuntal) press ENTER

Example: beethoven and (sonata no 8 or pathetique or op 13) press ENTER
Broader: beethoven and piano sonata* press ENTER

Use the * (asterisk) as a truncation symbol to retrieve variant forms of a word root. Use the Boolean OR to expand your search by including synonyms and related terms. When using two different Boolean commands in the same search statement ("and" and "or" in the preceding examples) you must include parentheses to indicate which command is to be performed first.
