Deming, Schafer win
opener
Some of us were getting lonesome for Roxbury, after ten weeks on the sidelines. We could hardly wait for the cold weather to end, but then when it came time for the Series to begin and it was still cold, we ran anyway.
At 8:30 on Saturday morning, partly cloudy skies, 20 degrees and a stiff north wind, fifty six intrepid runners lined up at the start. When Head Director Bob Lewis said "Go!", they went.
There was ice on the roads in several places, but it only went across the road
near the start on West Apple Lane. As far as we know, everyone navigated
through the hazard safely.
After the dust and the ice settled, three runners aimed in at the same time, last season's Points winner Chris Deming at 14:53, just a second ahead of the Morehouse twins, Rosie in second, Andy in third.
The race for fourth place was just as close, Joe Whelan coming in at 15:34, again just ahead of rookie Matt Cappiello and Scott Holmes.
The women's race was no blowout, either, with Mary Schafer 17th overall in 17:31, just nine seconds and three places ahead of Theresa Krebs. Indeed, there were close finishes all up and down the results tables, planting the seeds for this year's rivalries.
People
Six (count them) SIX women from Roxbury ran in this week's race. How many of them can you identify in the results? (Maybe we'll post the answer next week, if we remember.) We're pretty sure this is record attendance at the regular weekly races for the women of this tiny town that hosts our races every week. Credit to Mo van Moffaert for her enthusiastic recruiting efforts.
Newbie Matt "Cappie" Cappiello finished fifth in his first ever Roxbury race, but since he didn't know to take a stick, it took a bit to get that straightened out. Rather than push everyone else back a place, we just game him fourth-and-a-half place this week. He'll laugh about this someday. On the other hand, he might be the only one in the race to beat his house number. He lives at 1621, and he ran 15:34. Not a bad rookie appearance!
Mandy Deming returned to the starting line this week. With one of our best Finish Line specialists competing, it fell to first place Uncle Chris Deming and third place finisher Andy Morehouse to try to run the finish line. They found it is a lot trickier than it looks, but they managed to get what seem to be complete and accurate results. Contact WebGuy if you see any mistakes.
Safety
Safety is important. That's why Scott Benjamin gives us the safety warning every month.
Be safe. Be polite to the drivers. Remember, if a car hits you, it probably won't damage the car much at all.
Always choose a safe line.
Try to stay on the same side of the road, usually facing traffic.
In general, follow the people in front of you. You can see them better than they can see you.
Call traffic warnings to other runners. "Car up!" or "Car back!" Even if it's a truck.
Dress brightly. Cars see bright orange, blue and red better than they see gray. Give them a chance to miss us.
Fossil has three rules of running:
Be safe
Have fun
It's more fun if you run well
Be nice to the drivers. For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury. Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.
This week's pictures
Up top we have the pictures of three runners who did this week's race with no shoes on. That's a brave thing for people to be doing in February, but these runners seem none the worse for wear. From left to right, they are Dudley Ong, Mia Myhill and Rosie Morehouse. Rosie finished second in this week's race.
Then we have a shot of the sprint to the finish, Chris edging Rosie, who is barely a nose ahead of Andy.
Then there's a picture of last year's t-shirt design. Like most years, it was designed by Roxbury Hall of Famer Dave Harvey.
Then we have Scott Benjamin giving the Safety Warning for February.
Below that we have the top men's points finishers in the 2007 Prestigious Roxbury Points Race, and a little farther down, the women.
Along side the results we
have Brian
Vanderheiden and Torpedo Ruospo
battling the elements at Boston this year. Then there's a shot of
Mark Zerbe in his red vest. Then we
have Jon Binzen worrying about the fog in
front of the pavillion. Near the bottom of the column,
a shot of Fast Mario Hasz and his wife Diane, the Belle of the Finish
Line.
Down at the bottom, we have Fossil meeting a dragon in Germany. He was back in Germany recently, and the dragon is still there and as healthy as ever.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com. For information contact Bob Lewis at bwlnm (at) aol (dot) com, or at 203 240 0162.
