Chilly Spring Championship

    First Saturday in May is more than just the Larry Kershnar Mid-Spring Championship in Roxbury; it's Kentucky Derby Day.  The Roxbury Race attracted more runners than that other one in Lexington, though.  It was longer and had more hills, too.

    Some people think it's too bad that the race didn't end at the two mile mark.  If it had, the results would have been very different.  At two miles, Reliable Lou Denaro, leader in the Prestigious Points Race, led Chris Deming.  Dan Lynch led Rosie and Andy Morehouse.  Bruce Goulart led Chuck Rocca and the Fossil, and Brian Vanderheiden was somewhere back by the parking lot.

    Lots changed in the second half.  Lou couldn't keep up and faded to fourth place.  Andy and Rosie moved past Dan Lynch to second and third.  Chuck Rocca led the Fossil past Bruce Goulart, who succumbed to the hill and finished 11th.  Then the Fossil thanked Chuck by dumping him and then fighting his way past Dan Lynch.  Finally, Briand Vanderheiden came from nowhere to finish just a second behind the leg-weary Fossil.  

    That's why we don't call the race when it's only half finished.

    Among the women, Cindy Scannell nabbed her first win of the season, beating Nora Hulton by some unknown amount of time, more than 11 seconds but less than two and a half minutes.  We're not sure because the wet weather jammed the printer and we don't have everyone's time.   

People    

    Punctuality-impaired Brian Vanderheiden might have finished better than 5th if he'd arrived at the race on time.  It's a common problem.  We try to wait, but there are limits.

    Now that Westconn mathematics professor Chuck Rocca has tenure, he doesn't have to let his senior colleague the Fossil win all the time.  The two were together with two miles to go, but the Fossil is still pretty good on hills.  He finished 7th up Mt. Washington many years ago, and still knows some tricks.
