4.2 miles - down Hemlock, up Ranney May 14, 2008 8:30 am - 60 degrees, bright sun, north wind |

Deming, Krebs
At the sound of "Go," Chris Deming went out just a little faster than anyone else could manage. Somebody tried, but disappeared after about two miles before we could identify him. By the end of the race, Chris had built up almost a minute on points leader Lou Denaro. Lou, in turn, was 14 seconds ahead of Joe Mendes, and then it was another seven seconds before the Fossil came in.
Theresa Krebs led Cindy Scannell by two minutes and seven places to take the women's crown for her first win of the season.
There was some confusion about the course today, and a little bit about its distance, too. We'd been planning to run a 4.5 mile course up Chalybes and down Hemlock, but signals got crossed and instead we ran down Hemlock and up Ranney. Ranney is a tougher hill. The Hemlock-Ranney course has always been 4.2 miles in the past, but people were suggesting that perhaps it is only 4.1 miles. [Note: MapMyRun.com gives this course a distance of 4.19 miles. We used 4.2 miles to calculate paces.]
People
Some people are taking it easy before the Vermont City Marathon, coming up tomorrow (Sunday). Watch for their performances, and let us know so we can report them here. Online results are to be posted Sunday evening at http://www.runvermont.org/
Results:
Jeff Sheldon - 21st place overall - 2:46:29
Brian Vanderheiden - 144th place overall - 3:11:05
Jay Seney - 374th place overall - 3:31::40
Entered, but not in the results: Mike Abraham, Pat Viklund, Jean Poodiack and Bob Poodiack
Reliable Lou Denaro and his lovely wife Prasama are back from a week in Bermuda. They report that, though running wasn't very high on their activities agenda, in what little running they did, they found it surprisingly hilly.
Jeff Tindell, one of several Fast Jeffs who run Roxbury, is joining Jeff Sheldon on the sidelines, but while JS is there for a good reason (showing an unexpected bit of good sense as he tapers for his Vermont City Marathon), JT is injured. In code, JT is on the DL for some PT on his PF. (Jeff Tindell is on the Disabled List for some Physical Therapy on his Plantar Fascia). It is reported to be a tear, not the usual plantar fascitis, which is more of an inflammation. He did it playing tennis (#3 on the Risky Things Runners Do to Get Hurt List. #1 - Softball, slide in to second. #2 - basketball.) He'll be out 4 to 6 weeks. Take care of it, Jeff.
Andrea and Kara were at Roxbury today to cheer on Kurt. Good to see you both.
The Fossil's sister Meg was visiting from Minnesota this week and enjoyed watching the race and meeting people. She reports that everyone seems really nice and had a good time. We fooled her, didn't we?
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com. For information contact Bob Lewis at bwlnm (at) aol (dot) com, or at 203 240 0162.
