2008 Roxbury Race #16

3.52 miles - down Hemlock

June 14, 2008

8:30 am - 75 degrees, hazy sun

Sheldon, Krebbs

Jeff Sheldon started easy at this week's 3.52 mile Roxbury Road Race.  He didn't take the lead for over 100 yards.  Matt Cappiello tried to keep up with him for a while, but Jeff's long, easy stride was just too much for him, and Matt finished second, a minute and a half behind.

Hall of Famer Dave Harvey was third, a minute behind that.  At about the mile mark, he pulled away from a foursome of Fossil, Chuck Rocca and Joe Mendes, and finished about 40 seconds ahead of Fossil, then Joe, with Chuck a minute behind that.

Among the women, Theresa Krebbs ran a powerful race, finishing eighth over all, two minutes ahead of points leader Mary Shafer.

This week, older brother Larry won the Battle of the Deming Brothers, two seconds ahead of Chris.

People

The Fossil has famous shoes.  He got a flashy new pair of Mizuno racing shoes in 1989 and wore then for the Boston Marathon and just a few other races each year until about 2001, when he retired them.  After letting them sit on the shelf for a year or two, he started wearing them around the house and to races for "before the race" shoes.  People started to notice the shoes, but they didn't notice that he always changed them before he actually did any running.  After Saturday's race, the Fossil went down to Wallie's Store in New Milford (that's the problem with a friendly, locally owned store; it has a real name, but everyone just calls it Wallie's) and bought a new pair of training shoes, Mizunos, as it happened.  And there, on the wall, was a big picture of the start of the 1991 Boston Marathon.  Of course, the Fossil is in the picture, and we all know he's wearing those famous old shoes.  Next time you're in there, see if you can find him.

Sharp-eyed readers of the Newlyweds page of the News-Times may have noticed our old friend Jon Chesto, aka "Ishmael" recently tied the knot.  Congratulations to both, and we hope he'll bring her around to meet us sometime.

The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com.  For information contact Bob Lewis at bwlnm (at) aol (dot) com, or at 203 240 0162.

Deming Brothers, Chris and Larry

Four colorful outfits, one far too colorful.

Current points standings

Things were pretty quiet in the Top Ten this week.  Chuck Rocca moved past Scott Benjamin on the road to take over seventh place.  Both of them reached 500 points this week.  Also, Matt Cappiello returned to the top ten, at the expense of the absent Russ Prbanic.

At the top, Ed Sandifer extended his lead over absent Lou Denaro (working) and Dan Lynch (in Paris), but there weren't enough points available in today's race for Joe Mendes to catch either of them.

Mary Shafer's lead among the women is still comfortable.

We had no rookies and no new Centurions, though a few people reached milestones.  So far this season, after 16 races, we've had 761 racers, an average of 47.6 runners per week.  With only 25 this week, this was the smallest race so far this season.

In the table below, runners who have not missed a race yet this year are marked with a *.  Rookies, those running their first Roxbury race of the season, are marked with an "R", and people reaching 100-point milestones are marked with a C.  Other symbols and doodads may be added later in the season.
