2008 Roxbury Race #19

2.4 miles - down Chalybes

Schafer wins 11th

Andrew Levy wins 1st

It was a cool, foggy morning, comfortable for running, and most people didn't need sun glasses.  At the start, three season rookies, Andrew Levy, his brother Adam, and Glen van Moffaert quickly pulled away from the crowd.  In the end, Andrew, fresh off a season of varsity track at Cornell, had built almost a minute lead over his older brother Adam, who'd spent the year teaching in Hungary.  Glenn was just six seconds behind Adam, and Dave Harvey was just two seconds farther back.

For the eleventh time this season, Mary Schafer won for the women, this time finishing 17th overall in 16:50

Tommy Vanderheiden didn't know to take a stick at the end of the race.  His father Brian was only a little behind, and he got the only stick.  We gave Tommy place 33.1 and Brian place 33.2.  As a consequence, there were actually 50 finishers, not the 49 finishers that the results would suggest.

Yet another complication that the Officials had to deal with was that nobody wanted to finish 34th, but both Paul Butler and Bob Satterlee claimed 35th place.  They were only three seconds apart, but one of them had to see the other up there, and the other had to hear the one breathing down his neck.  Fess up, guys; who won?

This would have been the 21st race of a 42-race season, had we not been snowed out twice back in the cold weather part of the year.  As it is, it's the 19th race, and next week's Mid Summer Championship ($5) will put us half way through the regular season.

Whining

The Web Team apologizes for further problems with the website.  We have been beset by Web Gremlins this year.  The latest problem has been that we ran out of server space.  We'd used 99.47% of our allotted 100 megabytes of server space, and we just couldn't save any more files.  It took over a week to get our allocation increased to 150 MB, and that should get us through the season.

People

We welcome back Jeff Tindell, after several weeks on the sidelines with an injury. Jeff has to figure out if it feels bad to get beat by people he used to beat before he got hurt, or if it's going to feel good to get better each week as his fitness returns.  But most of all, it feels good to be running again.

Kyle Knight's Mom served as Starter and Timer today.  She was comfortable with the technology of the stopwatch, but she was nervous speaking in front of the crowd.  She was much relieved when the group responded as she'd hoped to her two-word speech" "Set ... Go!"  Fifty runners did exactly what she told them to do.

Reliable Lou Denaro was back this week.  His new job requires him to work many Saturdays.  On the other hand, his commute is only 3.8 miles, compared to over 30 miles for his old job.  He celebrated with a quick 5th place finish.

The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com.  For information contact Bob Lewis at bwlnm (at) aol (dot) com, or at 203 240 0162.

Current points standings

Week 19

Joe Mendes shaved a point off the Fossil's lead, leaving the gap at a mere 61 points.  He might have shaved two points but for Mike Abraham's tough kick over the last 300 meters.

Mary Schafer moved back into the Top Ten, leaping over the absent Matt Cappiello and beating Russ Pribanic by a few places to pass him, too.

We had fourteen rookies this week, led by the Bevy of Levys who return every summer.  Also Glenn van Moffaert, related to someone we know, who ran a strong race and finished third, and a very suspicious cadre of folks from an area high school.  We won't identify them further, because it will make their rivals jealous.

We also welcome back Kyle Knight, who finally has some health and injury problems under control and returns after an extended absence.  Kyle's mom held the stopwatch today and also served as Starter.

Only four runners still have perfect attendance as we approach the midpoint of the 40-race season.  They are, in order of total points, Ed Sandifer, Scott Benjamin, Bob Lewis and Paul Courtney.  That's not the same as their order of age.

In the table below, runners who have not missed a race yet this year are marked with a *.  Rookies, those running their first Roxbury race of the season, are marked with an "R", and people reaching 100-point milestones are marked with a C.  People whose ages were different this week than they were in our data base are marked with a B.  If everything in the data base works perfectly, this means they had a birthday recently, but we know the data base isn't perfect. Other symbols and doodads may be added later in the season.

This is one of the dragons in the fountain outside the 500-year old church in Halle, a rural city in the old East Germany.
