    It was a sizzling field on a sweltering morning at this week's 3.7 mile Roxbury Road Race.  It took a 6:30 pace to get into the top ten, a pace that is usually good for 4th or 5th place.

    At the gun, Andrew Levy, Jeff Sheldon and Ken Levalle went out hard and had a big lead by the time they got to the big Ranney Hill.  The lead pack broke up there.  Andrew pulled away and Ken drifted back, to where Chris Deming came just seven seconds short of catching him.

    No women could keep up with Mary Schafer, so she turned the tables on Mark Zerbe this week, finishing 24th overall, first among women by a substantial margin.

    A contingent of athletes from an area high school (we're still keeping it anonymous so as not to tip other high schools which team is working so hard this summer and looks really strong for the fall) ran as a fierce pack and occupied half of the top dozen places for the first half of the race.  They split up a bit after that, mostly by moving forward, and those who dropped back only gave up two or three places.  They look scary strong for the fall.

Safety in the heat

    After the race, the Fossil was guzzling Gatorade.  He noticed that his hand was shaking.  He was dehydrating.  He'd drunk nearly a quart of fluids before the race, including half a bottle of Gatorade immediately before the race began, and still he had dehydration symptoms after the race.

    Treatment was simple.  More fluids.  

    There are lots of reasons NOT to be like the Fossil, but dehydrated isn't one of them.  Dehydration kills more runners in races than cars or heart attacks, and it's easy to prevent.  Don't be that kind of statistic.

People    

    Now that soccer season for five year olds is drawing to a close, Mark LoSacco says we might see a bit more of him for the next several weeks.

Week 21

 

    Jolting Joe Mendes shaved two points off the Fossil's lead today with a fast start and a gutsy finish, leaving his deficit at 62 points.  Dan Lynch dropped four points, and now stands 81 points back.  Among the women, Mary Schafer, now with 13 wins on the season, has over 300 points on former season points champions Lynn Zuback and Nora Hulton.

 

    We welcome seven rookies this week, and Erik Gundel reached the 100-point milestone.  There were apparently five birthdays.

 

    In the table below, runners who have not missed a race yet this year are marked with a *.  Rookies, those running their first Roxbury race of the season, are marked with an "R", and people reaching 100-point milestones are marked with a C.  People whose ages were different this week than they were in our data base are marked with a B.  If everything in the data base works perfectly, this means they had a birthday recently, but we know the data base isn't perfect.
