Sheldon, Schafer survive

two long hills

    Straight off the starting line Jeff Sheldon took the lead and Chris Deming grabbed second place.  That didn't change for the whole 6.7 miles.

    The rest of the race was pretty steady, too.  People ran cautiously, because the course was advertised as "hilly," but still some people didn't quite expect it to be THAT hilly.  The leg-breaker over Ranney Hill is enough most weeks, but right after we got down the other side, we had to turn left and climb into the sky along Painter Ridge Road.  Anyone who could still see took in some beautiful scenery, but some people were too tired to appreciate it.

    Roxbury Rookie Rebecca Press gave Mary Schafer a bit of a run for the roses, but Mary held on to win her 14th race of the season.

Safety in the heat

    After the race  two weeks ago, the Fossil was guzzling Gatorade.  He noticed that his hand was shaking.  He was dehydrating.  He'd drunk nearly a quart of fluids before the race, including half a bottle of Gatorade immediately before the race began, and still he had dehydration symptoms after the race.

    Treatment was simple.  More fluids.  

    There are lots of reasons NOT to be like the Fossil, but dehydrated isn't one of them.  Dehydration kills more runners in races than cars or heart attacks, and it's easy to prevent.  Don't be that kind of statistic.

People    

    Dan Lynch reports that he will miss next week's race. Something about he's going to Viet Nam.  Last time it was France.  Should we believe him if he doesn't bring home the t-shirt?

    Who are all those fast high school runners?  An older guy was hanging around the starting area (looked old enough to be Fossil's younger brother, and we all know that the Fossil is older than dirt).  Anyway, the old guy said something about the Ishmael Running Club.  And when we ran past John Shimer's house on South Street, John yelled at them out his upstairs window.  These kids are all lean, and when a car comes, they line up in a real narrow, straight line.

Week 22

 

    The Fossil got back two points on Jolting Joe Mendes this week, opportunistically passing J-J in the last half mile.  He'd tried to get past in the 4th mile, but Joe fought him off.  The race was just too long and too hilly to do it twice.  Among the women, Mary Schafer, now with 14 wins on the season, has over 300 points on former season points champion Lynn Zuback and moves into 9th place overall after beating Scott Benjamin this week.

 

    We welcome five rookies this week, mostly associated with the Ishmael Running Club, but also including second place woman Rebecca Press.  We also welcome four new Centurions, Ross Levy, Taylor Phillips. Paul Malek and Sean Kerton.  So far this year, 77 runners have reached that 100-point milestone and have earned the right to be called "Centurions."

 

    In the table below, runners who have not missed a race yet this year are marked with a *.  Rookies, those running their first Roxbury race of the season, are marked with an "R", and people reaching 100-point milestones are marked with a C.  People whose ages were different this week than they were in our data base are marked with a B.  If everything in the data base works perfectly, this means they had a birthday recently, but we know the data base isn't perfect.
