Andrews edges Schafer and DeMarrais

Palmer nips Sheldon

Short but sweet

Our starter today introduced himself as "Larry" and promised to serve up some high-speed road racing.  We got what we ordered.

Jeff Sheldon looked to win the race, but as the finish line approached, Steve Palmer had more legs than Jeff did and he pulled away for a two-second margin.

The race of the day was among the women.  Early on, Mary Schafer was duking it out with long-time friend (and long-missing from Roxbury) Marge DeMarrais.  Then, towards the end of the race, Lisa Andrews came up from behind to grab the crown, three seconds ahead of Mary, who, in turn, was just one second ahead of Marge.  What a race!

Points leaders Ed Sandifer and Joe Mendes went at it the whole race, too.  Jolting Joe, usually fast-starting, held back a bit and stalked the Fossil for most of the race, while the Fossil kept trying to pass long-time rival Mark Zerbe.  When Mark finally pulled past the Fossil, Joe blew past both of them and left the poor Fossil dusted in ninth place.

Slowing down

We all know that we usually slow down as the race gets longer.  The theory is that if you double the length of the course (and if other things aren't too different), then your pace per mile will slow down by a constant amount, about 20 seconds a mile for most people.  This amount is sometimes called the doubling constant.

So, if you are fit and you can run a mile in about 6:00, we'd guess you can run two miles at about 6:20 per mile, for a total time of about 12:40.  On the other hand, if you can run a half-marathon at an 8:00 minute pace (1:44:48), then we guess you can run a marathon at about 8:20 per mile (3:38:20).

WebGuy likes mathematics, so he did some math on this idea to see if he could understand it a little better.  He took the data from today's 8.2 mile race and compared it to our paces from the 4.3 mile race on High Bridge Road back on June 21.  He took these two races because they were similar courses, down hill, then back up the hill, but one was just about twice as long as the other.  The data for the 15 people who ran both races is given below:

Slowing down
8.2 mi 23-Sep 4.3 mi 21-Jun Slowdown
1 Jeff Sheldon 49.08 6.00 24.52 5.47 13
2 Joe Mendes 57.05 6.58 28.37 6.39 19
3 Ed Sandifer 57.35 7.01 29.05 6.46 15
4 Steve Benoit 59.48 7.18 29.56 6.58 20
5 Ray Fico 60.25 7.22 30.32 7.06 16
6 Mark Zerbe 63.42 7.46 31.23 7.18 28
7 Dan Lynch 62.19 7.36 31.54 7.25 11
8 Chris Deming 52.58 6.28 31.58 7.26 -58
9 Tom McNulty 64.57 7.55 32.21 7.31 24
10 David Mariani 67.18 8.12 33.35 7.49 23
11 Bob Lewis 74.33 9.05 35.30 8.15 50
12 Lynn Zuback 72.20 8.49 35.53 8.21 28
13 Russ Pribanic 79.16 9.40 36.02 8.23 17
14 Scott Benjamin 72.31 8.51 36.06 8.24 27
15 Mario Hasz 73.10 8.55 36.24 8.28 27

Webguy decided to disqualify Chris Deming from this list because he actually sped up by almost a minute per mile as the race distance doubled, and we guessed that he wasn't trying very hard on June 21.  No offence, Chris.

With Chris kicked out of the data, the average slowdown for the 14 survivors was 22.7 seconds per mile.  The data seems to fit the theory pretty well.  The doubling constant for this data is a little more than 23 seconds (because 8.2 miles is a little less than double 4.3).

Why don't you try to calculate some doubling constants for your own races, and see if your experience fits the theory. (8/23/2008)

People

Hall of Famer Corinne Bellemare returned to Roxbury for the first time this season.  She's been battling a foot injury for almost a year now.  Welcome back.

Fast-improving Erik Gundel tactfully beat neither JT Schemm, the physics teacher at his alma mater, NMHS, nor Chuck Rocca, one of his mathematics teachers at Western Connecticut State University.

Aforementioned Chuck Rocca is preparing to run the Mohawk-Hudson River Marathon in Albany in October.  He ran today's mile in 6:12 as part of the entire Roxbury Marathon course.

Jack Fico and his dad Ray finished 5th and 32nd today.  Jon and Harry Ong and their friend Dudley finished 17th, 37th and 38th.  Ryan, Kevin, Ian and Tom McNulty made it a family day and finished 42, 43, 49 and 50, and they had enough family left over to provide cheering fans at the finish line.  Henry, Steve and Calvin Palmer were 1st, 31st and 33rd.  Amanda and Chris Deming were 4th and 47th.  And we mustn't overlook Janet and Ross Levy in 22nd and 39th.

Did we miss anyone?

I wasn't sure, but I thought that Stan Murphy in 23rd and John Murphy Jr. in 28th weren't related.  This was news to them, as they've known each other all of Stan's life.  Stan was in town to go water skiing with his dad, but since Dad Murphy was running Roxbury first, Stan came along.  Welcome to Roxbury, Stan Murphy.

Pictures

Up top, Scott Benjamin gives the safety warning.  Chuck Rocca and Erik Gundel lurk in the background.  Then Al Mletzko and Corinne Bellemare join the Hall of Fame.  All the other pictures already have captions.

Current points standings

Week 26

Jolting Joe Mendes chopped two more points out of the Fossil's overall lead, and at the same time he reached the stratospheric Millennium Man Milestone.

Lou Denaro was the only of the Top Ten to miss this week, but it wasn't enough to drop him out of 5th place overall.  The highest place changes were Bob Lewis and Nate Maherer, who jumped over Russ Pribanic, who is nursing an injury and dropped to 14th place.

Our total number of different runner this year reached 250.  Last week we passed 100 miles raced.  People have earned a total of 34859 Prestigious Roxbury Points so far.  Three people, Bob Lewis, Ed Sandifer and Scott Benjamin, maintain perfect attendance for the season.

In the table below, runners who have not missed a race yet this year are marked with a *.  Rookies, those running their first Roxbury race of the season, are marked with an "R", and people reaching 100-point milestones are marked with a C.  People whose ages were different this week than they were in our data base are marked with a B.  If everything in the data base works perfectly, this means they had a birthday recently, but we know the data base isn't perfect. Other symbols and doodads may be added later in the season.
