Lynn Zuback Wins for Women

The Run for Jeromy raised money to fight juvenile diabetes, and is named after the Jeromy Lewis, 9-year old nephew of Head Director Bob Lewis.

The race started on the narrow jogging track at the Rec Area, did half a loop of the track before taking us out onto Rocky Mountain Road.  From there, it was an out-and-back on Hemlock, finishing at the usual phone pole on West Apple Lane.

Early on, the pace was controlled by fast-starting Lou Denaro, closely pursued by Chuck Rocca and Jolting Joe Mendes, all brightly colored, and shadowed by Mike Abraham, who at race time had been a father for less than 60 hours.  He was sleep-deprived, but had enough adrenaline that he lacked the good judgment to slow down when he got tired.

As the race went on, Lou faded to fifth, hobbled by a sore foot.  Chuck Rocca had less energy going up hill than down, but held on for a solid 4th place finish, and Abe pulled away to beat Joe by almost half a minute.  It was his first win in several years.

Among the women, Rapid Lynn Zuback built a substantial lead on Roxbury Rookie Christine Maloney on the way down the hill, but Christine took most if it back on the way up, leaving Lynn with a winning margin of only 16 seconds.  It was her second win of the season.

Eponymous Jeromy Lewis ran the alternate course and garnered 6 of those Prestigious Roxbury Points.

This week's winner, Mike Abraham, writes:

Hey All,

Please excuse the group mail, but I wanted to share the news that Wylden Michael Abraham made his arrival at 10:39 PM on September, 10, 2008.

Cara did a wonderful job delivering and both Mom and baby are resting at home right now.

After serious consideration, we have decided against having Wyl run this Saturday's Roxbury Road Race, but he should factor into the scoring shortly.

Pictures to follow soon,

Mike

That was last Wednesday.  We're still waiting for those pictures.  Congratulations to Mike and Cara, and welcome to the world, Wylden.

Gardner-Purdy Points

While Prestigious Roxbury Points are certainly the most important points in the entire sport of running, there are other point systems for other purposes.  One of best is the Gardner-Purdy system, published in 1970 in the book Computerized Running Training Programs by James Gardner and Gerry Purdy. This book rates running performances on a scale from 0 to 1050 and from 100 yards to the marathon, and describes how to design track workouts that correspond to the various ratings.

The Boston Buildup race series in southern Connecticut uses Gardner-Purdy points as the basis of their season point system.  (By the way, the system we use at Roxbury is a variant on what is known internationally as Lugano Cup scoring.)

For example, if you ran this week's 5km race in 21:00, you can look on page 225 and find that this performance was worth 380 points, the same as a 3:29 marathon or a 44:18 10k.  To get the full 1050 points, you'd need a near World Record time of 12:29.  Unfortunately, the tables are old, and running wasn't very popular among people who weren't highly competitive, so the tables end at zero points for a 5k in 31:38.

So, what can you do with 380 Garder-Purdy points?  You can look on page 179 of the book and find a page of track workouts that would be challenging, but doable for a 380-point level runner, and that would serve as goals for someone who wants to be a 380-point level runner. Here are some sample workouts:

1.    2 or 3 1-mile repeats at 6:35, with 2 laps recovery

2.    16-18 440-yard repeats in 89 seconds with 1 lap recovery

3.    4-5 660-yard repeats in 2:09 with 2 laps recovery

Of course, even if you are already running at 380 points, you'd have to build up to this, because it's dangerous to change your running habits too suddenly.  When the Fossil was much younger, he did track workouts regularly and found that these tables predicted what he could do quite accurately.  Now, though, he thinks the tables give workouts that are too tough for someone as old as he is, so he'd run workouts that are about 50 points easier than his race times would suggest.

Here is a brief table of some of the point values for 5k performances:

Time Points Time Points Time Points
15:01 830 21:00 380 26.58 130
16:02 730 21:58 330 27.55 100
16:57 650 23:02 280 28.56 70
17:58 570 23:58 240 30.02 40
18:59 500 24.59 200 31.00 15
19:57 440 26.04 160

If you're good at the math, you can use the idea of the doubling constants we mentioned a few weeks ago to calculate corresponding points values for other distances like 10k, then 20k and 40k, which is almost a marathon.

These tables should be used with caution.  For some people, track workouts make you take running seriously instead of running for fun.  Remember the Fossil's second rule of running: it's supposed to be fun.

Also, remember his first rule: be safe.  If you're doing a track workout and something begins to hurt, don't wait and see if the pain will go away.  Stop. Go home.  Put ice on it.

Current points standings

Week 28

Jolting Joe Mendes missed last week, fell 89 points behind, but got one of those points back this week.  There are only 12 races left in the season, so he'll have to do better than that.

The only Top Ten action was from Chuck Rocca, who advanced to 6th place when Brian Gildea missed.

We're 70% of the way through the season now, so those runners already at 700 points have a chance to reach 1000 if they keep their attendance up.  However, attendance usually drops off a bit late in the season, so even then it might be tough.  Two runners have already reached the Millennium Mark, and Chris Deming will reach that milestone the next time he races.

In the table below, runners who have not missed a race yet this year are marked with a *.  Rookies, those running their first Roxbury race of the season, are marked with an "R", and people reaching 100-point milestones are marked with a C.  People whose ages were different this week than they were in our data base are marked with a B.  If everything in the data base works perfectly, this means they had a birthday recently, but we know the data base isn't perfect. Other symbols and doodads may be added later in the season.
