Krebs wins in strong womens field

Deming romps

     One of our Roxbury Regulars, notorious for his slow starts and obnoxiously strong finishes found himself in about 15th place after a quarter of a mile with SIX women ahead of him, contesting the lead.  He tried to guess who would win, and he guessed wrong.  He passed them reluctantly, knowing that if he'd been patient, he'd have watched one of the most competitively contested races in Roxbury history.

    In the end, Roxbury's own  Theresa Krebs edged former Princeton University star Marge De Marrais, by just seven seconds.  Both of them ran sub-seven minute pace and finished in the top ten overall.  Last week's winner, Dawn Riebeling, finished only about half a minute behind, 12th overall.  Women's Points Leader Mary Schafer fought bravely, but the pace was too hot for her and she finished 17th overall, half a minute farther back.

    Marge De Marrais is mounting a comeback after being absent from Roxbury for a couple of years, fighting injuries.  She knows Mary Schafer from work, and we suspect that it is Mary's "bad" influence that has helped to encourage Marge to lace up the shoes again.  Welcome back, but stay healthy.

    Chris Deming ran away from the starting line like it was a short race and he was very fit.  He pretty much ran away with the race, and he looked smooth and strong until he disappeared in the distance.  He left behind a good race for second place between last week's winner, Papa Mike Abraham and Brian Vanderheiden.  Papa Mike prevailed by just two seconds.

Mike

Papa Mike's pictures finally arrived.  See above.  Wylden (Wyl for short) is a very handsome young person, and from the picture, we can all see that he clearly takes after his mother in that department. Congratulations to Mike and Cara, and welcome to the world, Wylden.

Spider webs

    Last week as he drove to the race, WebGuy was passing near the Housatonic River, under an otherwise ordinary string of utility lines.  These wires, though, were decorated with perfect spider webs, each about a foot across and spaced about half a foot apart, bedecked with the morning dew and glistening in the sunlight.  WebGuy isn't good enough with a camera to capture these images, and it took such perfect conditions that maybe he'll never see it again.  These words will have to suffice to preserve their memory, and to remind us that if we keep our eyes open when we're running, we will occasionally be rewarded with glimpses of the glories of the world we live in.

Week 30

 

    We are now 75% through the 40-week season.  Dan Lynch became the season's fourth Millennium Man, passing 1000 points in 27 races.  

 

    In Top Ten action, absent Brian Gildea slipped two places and now clings to the edge of the Top Ten.  He was overtaken by David Mariani and Scott Benjamin, and is just a race away from being caught by Marh Schafer as well.

 

    Joe Mendes shaved just one point off the Fossils overall lead, and now sits 86 points back with 10 races to go.  Chris Deming remains the only one in the Top Ten who's won a race this year.  The rest of them are there on good attendance and steady quality.

 

    In the table below, runners who have not missed a race yet this year are marked with a *.  Rookies, those running their first Roxbury race of the season, are marked with an "R", and people reaching 100-point milestones are marked with a C.  People whose ages were different this week than they were in our data base are marked with a B.  If everything in the data base works perfectly, this means they had a birthday recently, but we know the data base isn't perfect.
