Deming Captures Roxbury Marathon In Record Field Of 26 Finishers

ROXBURY – Chris Deming, 42, captured the fifth annual Roxbury Marathon, covering the rolling course in 3-hours, 16-minutes and 42-seconds in a record field of 26 finishers, more than twice the previous high of 12 that was set in 2007.

Deming, who won the 2007 Roxbury Road Race Series season championship, was followed by runner-up by Coukri Baumamoun, 39, who was clocked in 3:22.03

Marty Duchow, 46, placed third in 3:25.53 over the 26.2-mile course.

Amber Cullen, 26, of New Hampshire captured the women’s division and placed 10th overall in 4:06.14.

The race attracted runners from such states as Indiana, Wisconsin, New Hampshire, Missouri and Florida, who, in many cases, were running it as part of their campaign to complete a marathon in all 50 states.

The course started on Rocky Mountain Road and then traveled through the center of Roxbury to near Judds Bridge and back, and then included five trips around a roughly 3.55-mile loop that covered part of the paved track at the Everett Hurlburt Community Park on West Apple Lane.

The race and the accompanying Roxbury Half-Marathon generated about $370 for the Roxbury Road Race Series’ T-shirt/Grants fund for the entry of $5 per runner.

“It is amazing how this race has attracted runs from points, north, east, south and west,” said Bob Lewis, who has been head director of the Roxbury Road Race Series, which sponsors weekly runs on Saturday mornings from mid-February to early-December.

On Dec. 6 the series completed its 32nd season.

It will start its 2009 season on Saturday, Feb. 21, at 8:30 a.m. with a 2.4-mile race at the community park. There will be no entry fee.
