Next Week: 2.4 miles up Chalybes |
Deming edges Sheldon.
Schafer romps.
Please send times.
It was a fast, windy day in Roxbury. Chris Deming and last week's
winner Jeff Sheldon rocketed out to a wide early lead and had their own
little race, mostly out of sight of the 55 or so runners who were
chasing them. In the end, Chris pulled away for a minor upset and
opened a narrow five-second victory.
Among the women, Mary Schafer beat Kirsten Begg by about half a minute and Eunice Bussom was about half a minute behind that.
About those times. The printer malfunctioned and the memory banks of the stopwatch were full so the recall function couldn't recover the times. Our technical experts actually read the instruction manual and have learned exactly how to use the recall function, so this memory failure should happen less often in the future. However, this week we have only about a quarter of the times. THEREFORE, if you know your time or the times of others, would you please send them to WebGuy, esandifer (at) earthlink (dot) net.
People
A third Deming brother, Dave Deming, and his daughter Charlotte came from North Carolina for this week's race. Charlotte helped her cousin Amanda work at the finish line.
Bob Lewis narrowly escaped ambush by fast-finishing Nora Hulton this week.
Former Brookfield HS star John Bucci returned to Roxbury after being away for about 15 years. He had run with us when JT Schemm and Brian Gagner were in high school. He was back in town celebrating Easter with his parents.
Dudley Ong
enjoys spending winters in warmer climates, and returned from South
Carolina this week. His friend Harry came back, too.
Welcome back to both of you. Dudley
returns to find himself second in his division, displaced, for now at least, by Terry,
who has run three races in a row now. We encourage runners whose
companions fall into the "Other" category to register them so they can
appear in the results. We know it always gives Terry
and Dudley a thrill to see their names on
the Internet.
Remember Jenna? Great season two years ago. Met a guy. Missed most of last season? There's a rumor that if the weather warms up just a little bit more, then she might make an appearance and that she might bring her new stroller. Will Madelyn be looking over her shoulder?
After the race, winner Chris Deming pitched in to help with the stopwatch. Unfortunately, even his refined technical skills weren't enough to overcome its problems. He and Larry did manage to take steps so it probably won't happen again, but PLEASE send in your times so we can try to fill in the results.
The Unknown runner who finished 10th on March 28 has been identified as Alan Peck. We fear we scared him off, or maybe offended him, by not getting his name at the finish line.
Sadly, we note the passing of Robert North Deming (1915-2009), father to Larry and Chris, grandfather to Amanda and Collin. He can be proud of the fine family he left us. We at Roxbury extend our sympathies. "He had a good, long run."
Pictures
Up top, we have a new picture of stroller sensation Madelyn Bussom, along with new papa Scott..
Then we have a picture of this week's winner, Chris Deming, pitching in with the stopwatch at the finish line after the race. Then the foggy starting line at a race in August. Down the side, we have David Mariani, smiling as he sees the finish line, then Mandy Deming, the one who works the stopwatch and gets us accurate times every week. Below that, Scott Benjamin, who ran the hill hard and then still had half a mile to the finish line.
Farther down, Harry Ong (Dudley is around somewhere) beats Cindy Scannell by a couple of seconds. The last one there is a photo by Charlie Euston of a pack in the 7.3 mile race. You can see Ross Levy's legs in the back, and the corner of Brian Gildea's head behind Jeff Tindell.

Current points standings
Week 8
It continues to be a tough, tight battle at the top of the table. Only nine points separate Chuck Rocca in first place from third place Jeff Sheldon. Indeed, no points separate second from third, as Fossil gets second on the tiebreaker, races run this year, by just one race.
Jeff Tindell missed the race and tumbled from 7th to 12th, and that let David Mariani back into the top ten. Mary Schafer continues to lead for the women, 11th overall.
In the table below, runners who have not missed a race yet this year are marked with a *. Rookies, those running their first Roxbury race of the season, are marked with an "R", and people reaching 100-point milestones are marked with a C.
