2 Essays:  30 Percent Each

 

On the real exam, you will choose five of seven possible map identifications, five of seven term identifications, and two of three essay questions.    The identifications will be chosen from the lists below.

 

 

Part One:

Part Three:  

 

Essays You will have a choice of two out of three of these essays.  The purpose of these essays is for you to reflect critically on the material you have been given and think through certain problems.   Please make reference to the reading assigned in the class and to specific examples in your essay..   I am concerned with two things: 1) that you have an argument, and 2) that you demonstrate a familiarity with the points and readings that could support your argument

 

Please feel free to interpret these questions any way you wish as long as you make sure I understand what you re trying to say.

 

  1. Were domestic problems within China the proximate cause of the Opium War?   If so, which domestic problems?   If not, what was the proximate cause and why  
  2. Was Shen Fu a member of the elite?
  3. Is the revolution of 1911 evidence of the failure of the ti/yong philosophy  
  4. Who was the most effective ruler, Kangxi, Yongzheng, or Qianlong, and why?  
  5. In your opinion, when did Chinese people begin to be motivated by nationalism, and why?  
  6. Can Hong s initial success in the Taiping rebellion be related to his religious ideology, his treatment of women, both, or neither?  
  7. It s 1838, and you re appointed special commissioner to Canton to deal with the opium problem.  Write a memorial to the Daoguang Emperor explaining what the best course of action is and why.
  8. It s 1898, and you re a major Chinese figure (conservative, radical, or reformist) with the ear of the Guangxu Emperor.  Write a memorial advising him on the course of action that he should take.
  9. Was China a modern nation by 1911?
  10. Did China change in the 19th century primarily due to external or internal events?
